Chapter Fourteen

I was sick almost the whole flight. I didn’t know if it was from being airborne or the fact that my cancer was likely getting worse.

Part of me didn’t care.

I had booked a one-way ticket to a beachfront resort in Miami, and nothing was stopping me. Although my decision was spontaneous, I didn’t want to risk leaving the country and becoming even sicker with no chance for proper medical treatment overseas. I figured if worse came to worst, I could be flown back from Miami to Massachusetts in a matter of hours.

When I arrived in Miami, I quickly realized that leaving my cell phone at home wasn’t the greatest idea. How was I supposed to order an Uber?

“Way to go, Nina,” I criticized myself. Then I thought about it. I brought my tablet with me on the flight to listen to an audiobook. I didn’t get that far into the story because I had to keep getting up to go to the bathroom, but I should be able to download the Uber app from the tablet to order a ride.

I slipped it from my purse and quickly swiped the screen, going to the app store to download Uber.

Thankfully, my attempt was successful and soon, I was wheeling my suitcase toward my waiting ride.

“Never again will I leave my cell phone at home while on vacation,” I mused under my breath as I sat back in the leather seats, heading toward my hotel suite.

When I arrived at the hotel, the first thing I was taken aback by was the sight of the beautiful palm trees. I watched them sway in the gentle breeze for a few moments, then headed inside to check into my suite.

Once inside, I was in awe of the beautiful decor. The concierge escorted me to my suite, and as he opened the door, I gasped. The spacious room before me was a paradise within a paradise.

To my right, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows showcased a breathtaking ocean view. A sliding glass door led to a private patio that seemed to hover right above the sandy beach. The sound of crashing waves beckoned me.

The main room was a study in luxury. A plush king-sized bed dominated one side, draped in what I knew had to be thousand-thread-count sheets. They looked so inviting, I was tempted to dive in immediately.

Beautiful paintings adorned the walls, each one a masterpiece that added to the room's elegant ambiance. A massive 105-inch flatscreen TV hung on the wall opposite the bed, and beneath it sat a sleek desk with a laptop, ready for use.

As I slipped off my sandals, my toes sank into the softest carpet I'd ever felt. I padded across the room to a cozy mini living area, complete with a sumptuous sofa and a recliner that looked perfect for lounging.

The kitchenette caught my eye next. It was small but fully equipped with a table and chairs, a full set of dishes, and gleaming stainless-steel appliances including a stove and refrigerator.
